Imagi's "Astro Boy" Flops in Japan, but Scores in China

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Imagi Animation Studios' Astro Boy has been a major flop in Japan, pulling in only $328,457 on more than 200 screens ($1,500 per screen, vs. the #1 film of the same week pulling in $4 million on over 300 screens for $13,200 per screen). However, the movie broke the opening weekend box-office record for a CGI animated film in China, unseating Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs by taking in 40 million yuan (approx. $5.9 million).

In its opening weekend in the United States, Astro Boy came in 6th place with $6.7 million in ticket sales.
