Variety and the Hollywood Reporter have reports on MIPCOM Jr., which just wrapped up in Cannes, Frances. Both address the impact on kids' TV programming of both the general down economic climate and the rise of alternate entertainment like video games, and also on the growing importance of marketing and licensing tie-ins to gain mindshare in their target audiences. However, the reports differ slightly on their assessment of trends and on highlights. Variety points out a growing trend for live-action shows over animated ones, since live-action can be cheaper to produce than cartoons, while the Hollywood Reporter points out a general message of more international co-productions as "the logical business model for the next generation."
The two reports also highlight a number of upcoming TV shows and tie-in products, including DQ Entertainment's CGI Jungle Book series, the Franco-Canadian New Adventures of Babar that brings the famed elephant monarch to CGI, and Decode Enterprises' hybrid live-action/animated series Dirtgirlworld.
