"Wall Street Journal" on Internationalizing Cartoon Characters

By Ed Liu

The Wall Street Journal examines the growing practice of "transcreating" cartoon characters for export from the United States to international markets (registration required). The article makes note of the newer versions of the Powerpuff Girls and Spider-Man created for Japanese and Indian markets, respectively, and also highlights Chinese versions of Disney's Mickey Mouse that resembles Sanrio's Hello Kitty. However, some examples are also raised where no localization was done without much effect, such as SpongeBob SquarePants (which was incorrectly predicted to fail in Japan) and Charles Schulz's Peanuts (which is not localized other than translation in accordance with Schulz's wishes).
