Review: Jackie Chan Adventures
Brainatra
Sat Sep 16 13:10:50 2000

Finally saw this show (amidst poor reception quality...apparently, the local WB affiliate broadcasts on all of 4 watts of power during the day...that, and probably the result of their transmitters being located outside of Indianapolis [Bloomington and Kokomo, IIRC]), and came away feeling neutral. On one hand, Chan seemed kept in character from his films (and the cartoon-Jackie's name *is* his real-life name...go fig). On the other hand, the niece they gave him, unfortunately, reminded me of...Scrappy Doo. With the number of times she kept wanting to see her uncle beat some ninja-thugs with his skills, and her wanting to help her uncle beat the bad guys up, I couldn't help but think "let me at 'em, Uncle Scooby, I'll *splat* 'em!" ;-)

The animation resembles MiB's, and they threw in some live-action bit with the real-life Chan at the end. Didn't catch who did the voices (the reception was too poor to read the squished-to-a-side-of-the-screen credits)...

Also saw part of MiB...has Agent Elle's voice been changed? She sounds completely different from when I last watched the show (which hasn't been for awhile, I guess)...she sounds more like Tress MacNeille (in her "female M.C./announcer" voice mode).

And while I'm discussing TV, I'll mention having watched the tape-delayed coverage of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics last night...and NBC's coverage was pretty much what I feared (though slightly less nationalistic than last time's)...I suppose now that the games have begun, to paraphrase Dot (as written by Robert in "Toons and Doom"):

Goody...now the usual formulaic coverage can begin, with so many over coverage of the same few events, nationalistic overtones, and the excessive amount of athletic interviews. We'll hear who wins in *newspapers* before we actually see the event on NBC, and it'll be on an 18-hour tape-delay like everything else...
