Batman Beyond # 50 - "The
Call" (SPOILERS)

I didnt think it was all that great.
Too much time was spent on showcasing the various JLU members. And I really wouldve
preferred to have seen more of the original members, rather than carbon copies (yes, I
know about the licensing problems, but cmonMicron?).
The whole schtick with Terry being the outsider on the team and everyone unfairly blaming
everything on him was a bit too cliché and predictable. The Hawkman-ish dude was
obviously intended to be a jerk, but he wasnt even a
love-to-hate-him-type character
just annoyingly one-dimensional.
Barda was pretty one-dimensional too. The new Green Lantern was probably the most
impressive of the bunch, but we didnt see nearly enough of her in Part 1. Hopefully
Part 2 will expand on er a bit.
Nice casting choice, though, with Jodi Benson as Aquagirl. And the chemistry between Terry
& she was cute, although rather underplayed (unless theyre planning on bringing
it up more in Pt. 2).
Supes was much more serious and down-to-business than he was on S:TAS. Hoping that in Pt.
2 well find out what happened after Legacy. The new costume really
doesnt do a lot for me, and the reading Chris McDonald gave sounded much more
full-of-itself (almost John Wayne-ish at times) than Tim Dalys on S:TAS. But again,
if they tell us what hes been going through these last 40-or-so years, and what
brought about the changes in him, it could definitely be very interesting.
Supes mentioned that Bruce had been one of the original founders of the Justice League
(presumably when it was still the JLA). Obviously the TAS continuum doesnt mesh with
the comic book canon (and the comic book canon these days doesnt mesh with the
pre-1988 canon, and there were glaring contradictions within the original canon anyhow),
but it leaves me wondering when exactly the JLA was formed in the series continuum?
Obviously after B:TAS and S:TAS had ended (since they were just meeting each other for the
first time in Worlds Finest, and their random meetings afterwards seemed
to indicate that they didnt work together regularly). So, apparently after Superman
had already lost the public favor, and Bruce was getting on in years
not in their
heydays.
The ending was sort of predictable
figured it would either be Supes or Green Lantern
(both because of the its-always-the-one-you-least-suspect angle), or
that Terry would be framed and the rest of the JLU would think it was him. The ending
scene, with Bruce handing Terry the Kryptonite, was very effective, no doubt about it. But
Bruce did seem to jump to conclusions rather hastily. I mean, you dont dispatch
Terry to kill Superman until youve at least tried to figure out what the heck is up.
But despite all that, it was an enjoyable episodejust nothing exceptional. It does
provide a lot of possibilities for Pt. 2, and if they play them up, next weeks
episode could wind up being really awesome. Im praying that they dont use some
trite explanation about whats up with Supes (being controlled by someone else, or
somesuch
). Im rather glad that they didnt save this one for the season
(and possibly series) finale, though. As Bruce Timm said, it really doesnt feel much
like a BB episode (as a whole it was more light and action-showishmore like S:TAS).
Anyway
not bad by any means, but still not worth getting up at 8:00. *Grumble*
